![]() ![]() ![]() The Graphic Novel is split into chapters continuing with number 13. The first thing you will notice is that virtually nothing has changed. ![]() Fence #4 Credit: BOOM! Studios Character Development What that was and how it affects Seiji’s relationships with his new teammates forms the backbone of this volume. Something happened between the two world class fencers that forced Seiji to join the Kings Row private school and it’s underdog fencing team. Volume 4 picks up directly from where Chapter 12 ended with Seiji face to face with his nemesis Jesse. The questions are, has the shift to the graphic novel format affected the story and is the longer wait between chapters worth it? The first 12 issues of Fence were witty and entertaining with a wonderful cast and found a loyal audience among young adults and the LGBTQ+ community. Published under BOOM! Studios Boom! Box imprint, Fence continues the adventures of a college fencing team and the relationships that emerge during the training. Making the move from monthly titles to Original Graphic Novels, Fence returns for a fourth volume later this year (expected 30 June 2020). ![]()

![]() ![]() His powers of observation are impressive and his descriptions-of how a raven puffs its feathers in a dominance display, of how a female calls for food from her mate, of the pecking order at a carcass-are formidably precise. ![]() At its best, his writing is distinguished by infectious enthusiasm, a lighthearted style and often lyrical descriptions of the natural world. ![]() As the birds mature, Heinrich details how these and other ravens feed, nest, mate, play and establish a society with clear hierarchical levels. As he describes tending to the demanding babies, chopping up roadkill, cleaning up after them and enduring their noisy calls for food, readers will marvel at how much Heinrich knows and at how much joy he derives from acquiring that knowledge. Although he has raised many ravens through the years (beginning with a tame pair that shared his apartment at UCLA in the 1960s), Heinrich focuses much of his attention on four nestlings he adopted from the Maine woods near his home. In a book that demonstrates the rewards of caring and careful observation of the natural world, Heinrich (Ravens in Winter, etc.), a noted biologist, Guggenheim fellow and National Book Award nominee (for Bumblebee Economics, 1979), explores the question of raven intelligence through observation, experiment and personal experience. ![]() ![]() ![]() This sci-fi adventure begins with Holly Evans, a visionary third grader who launches some seedlings into the iconosphere as part of a science experiment, And so the fun begins. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I loved watching these characters change and grow, both in how they related to their friends and families and in their connections with those who captured their hearts. There were also some absolutely beautiful love stories that developed within this entire series. The raw intensity of the struggles that these characters faced kept me eagerly turning pages. Old squabbles and strongholds were broken down as new alliances formed. I was definitely pulled into this story of ultimate good vs evil, truth vs lies, and power vs sacrificial love. The idea that someone’s morality is a trajectory, that it is more complex than the sum of their past actions, is illustrated by the arcs of numerous characters, among them Kaladin, Bluth, Gaz and the other deserters, and Elhokar. Secondly, that our perception of another person’s morality or character is dependent on our perspective and can involve assumptions that are deeply erroneous. First, that morality is a trajectory, not a fixed point - good people can become worse, bad people can become better. The heroes and villains of The Way of Kings are comparatively straightforward Words of Radiance introduces more complexity both in the morality of the different characters and in the ways they interact with each other. ![]() ![]() I’ve had difficulty putting a precise name to the concept at the heart of Words of Radiance, but I think ‘complexity’ is the closest I can get.
